How can you keep nail polish from getting thick and clumpy?

I find that I can only use half a bottle of nailpolish before it gets too thick and clumpy to apply a coat. Even if I just bought the polish 2 weeks ago and it started out perfect, it ends up too thick to finish off and has to be thrown out. I assume it's from the repeated dabbing in and out of the brush, or something like that.

Is it possible to add a drop or two of water or something to get back the consistency it first had? Is there a brand of nail polish that is more resistant to clumping? Any advice??How can you keep nail polish from getting thick and clumpy?
DO NOT add water. It will not work. Use nail polish thinner. If you use nail polish remover, it ruins the quality of the product and it will wear off or peel away from the nail faster. If you don't want to buy thinner, try a bit of clear nail polish from a new bottle.

Do this: Once you open the bottle, put a very thin coating of petroleum jelly on the outside of the rim. That will keep the nail polish from crusting up on the rim, which causes air to get into the bottle, causing the drying out. You can also keep your polish in a cool place. I have heard you can keep it in the refridgerator.

Never shake the bottle before applying polish. It creates bubbles. Turn the bottle upside down and roll between the palms of your hands. Fast drying nail polishes thicken and clump up faster than the slower drying ones. If you use slower drying ones, get a fast dry topcoat like Out the Door.

When you apply the polish, one sweep down the middle of the nail and then apply one sweep to either side of the nail to finish the coat. Don't overload the brush, because then it will not go on evenly and will not dry evenly. This is where you get smudges.

It isn't always the quality of the nail polish, it is how it is stored after use. I have cheap stuff as well as expensive and doing these simple steps prolong the life of my polish. I must say, however the type of brush makes a big difference in application. The Loreal nail polishes work very well because of their new brush. How can you keep nail polish from getting thick and clumpy?
ok try these ways

1. add 2 drops of nail polish remover

2. take a be be or something very small and round, put it in the bottle and shake it up.

3. when you use it, dont keep it open too long, the air can make it clump up.

4. buy salon nail polish. yes it is more expensive but the cheaper the nail polish, the more it will clump.

5. always shake up the bottle of nail polish before you use it.

but whatever you do DONT ADD WATER!!! it will ruin the polish because it had oil in it. thats probably the worse thing you can do
I was always told to add a drop or 2 of nail polish remover once this happens, but no more.

You may even try dropping a BB into it and shake it occasionally.
I add nail polish remover to the nail polish and it waters it down. (only a few drops).
For a quick fix, I just add a drop pr two of nail polish remover and shake it. I'm good to go. Also, make sure to not make it to thick when applying the first coat and thoroughly dry before applying second.
o.p. i nail polish does not clump. its wat we use at the salon and you can get it at a salon for like 7 dollars. when you dab it in and out, make sure your quick about it and dont leave it open for too long... the cheaper the nail polish, the clumpier it gets. adding water will make the texture worse, becuase nail polish is oil based. try opi or creative..and dont keep it open too long, then youll be good
I have the same prob' sometimes so what I noticed was if you keep the polish is a dry room temp. they last longer.but for those in which its too late add a lil polish remover just aon or two drops and shake so the lil ball inside can mix it around.
For a quick fix, add nail polish remover.

If you say that this always happens to you maybe you aren't applying it correctly causing it to dry up or maybe applying it too thick. You have to immediately cover it up. If you have no reason to keep it open, close it. Don't take you time applying (well of course be careful so that you can apply evenly). What I mean is don't neglect an open bottle. Maybe you are using a very bad brand as well.

You can look for brands like OPI, Sally Hansen, Essie and Orly. They specialize in nailcare. You need to look for a nail polish solvent. Its a gentler version of acetone/polish remover. It will dilute the polish but the fumes won't dry it out. Try going to a Sephora, Ulta or a Sally beautysupply place.

Also try the above brands which are of the highest and best professional quality.
I'm not crazy I promise this works.

1.Shake the nail polish

2. Put it in the refrigerator.

-It helps the nail polish become more smooth.
add just a little bit of nail polish remover to your polish it will thin it out.
